Digestive Enzymes: popularized, for GI and Digestive Issues

Digestive Enzymes Explained

Digestive enzymes are made and used by our bodies to digest food and help us absorb nutrients. They take larger food particles, called macromolecules, and break-them down into nutrients and molecules that our bodies can readily absorb. Digestive enzymes have become popularized, unfortunately, due to widespread GI illnesses and digestive issues. Over 2,500 years ago, the great Greek physician Hippocrates said, “all disease begins in the gut.” Lacking the proper enzymes prevents proper digestion, stopping the body from absorbing nutrients from food and making it vulnerable to a variety of illnesses.

What causes a low level of digestive enzymes? There are many factors. Firstly, the pancreas slows down enzyme production with age. Secondly, bad lifestyle habits such as excessive alcohol consumption and having a poor diet also lead to pancreatic inflammation causing enzyme production to drop dramatically. Whether lack of enzyme production can be fixed is still inconclusive according to clinical studies.

There are many types of digestive enzymes, but the main groups that break down the three macronutrients protein, fat, and carbs are:

  • Lipase – created in the mouth, stomach, and pancreas to break down the fats we eat. It turns fats into absorbable fatty acids
  • Amylase – produced by salivary glands and in the pancreas, these enzymes are responsible for breaking down carbohydrates. Critical for breaking down frequently consumed starches into sugars
  • Proteases and peptidases – a group of numerous enzymes that break down proteins into amino acids

Many people have turned to a few categories of digestive enzyme supplements. People who have trouble digesting specific food groups consume special formulas that provide individual groups of enzymes to meet a deficiency. Some others find that the best digestive enzyme supplements are complete formulas that aid them in the digestion of all foods. There are even enzyme formulas that promote various bodily functions such as healthy joints and joint mobility, and actually have a small relation to food digestion.
